Enzo Fernandez Next Club Odds: Chelsea Lead Chase For World Cup Winner

We are almost at the end of the January transfer window and betting sites anticipate a busy couple of days before the market closes for business on Tuesday.

Earlier this month it seemed like Enzo Fernandez would be staying at Benfica until the end of the season at the earliest, with the Portuguese giants insisting they would not sell him for anything less than his release clause of £105.5m.

But an exit appears to be back on the table for the Argentina international, who was a key part of his country’s World Cup-winning squad last month.

Chelsea The Only Show In Town As Things Stand

Chelsea backed away from a deal for Fernandez earlier in the window, having seemingly decided that they were unwilling to pay a three-figure sum for a player who has only been in Europe for a few months.

But reports over the weekend stated the Blues have revived their interest in the 22-year-old as Graham Potter seeks to bolster his midfield ranks. 

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are out of contract in the summer, while Denis Zakaria is only on loan at Stamford Bridge for the time being. 

It therefore makes sense that Chelsea are looking to improve their options in the engine room and odds of 2/13 on football betting sites suggest that Fernandez is their top target. 

Todd Boehly has now reportedly met release clause that Benfica are asking for, although there is still a chance that Chelsea turn their attention to Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo instead.

PSG’s Stuttering Form Could Prompt Late Splurge

Things have not gone particularly well for Paris Saint-Germain since the Ligue 1 season resumed post-World Cup. 

Since the start of January Christophe Galtier’s men have dropped points in three of their four league games, and their lead at the top of the table now stands at just three points.

In the past, PSG’s solution to problems has been to throw money at the squad. 

It is a policy that has had mixed success at best, but that does not necessarily mean the club’s Qatari owners will do anything different this time around.

Having said that, a last-minute splurge is unlikely to lead to Fernandez ending up at PSG, a move for which odds of 20/1 are being offered by Paddy Power. 

Manchester United Not In The Market For A Midfielder

In signing Christian Eriksen and Casemiro last summer, Manchester United addressed a long-standing need to strengthen their midfield. 

Both players have impressed since moving to Old Trafford, with Casemiro in particular having helped Erik ten Hag’s side in the Premier League top four race.

There is not any prospect of United adding their name to Fernandez’s list of suitors in the next couple of days, which is why they are priced at a lengthy 20/1.

For one, the club does not have much money to spend in January - as evidenced by the stop-gap signing of Wout Weghorst on loan. 

Secondly, midfield is no longer the area of the squad most in need of strengthening.

Liverpool Look Set To Hold Fire Until Summer

Unlike their arch-rivals, Liverpool definitely do need reinforcements in the centre of the park. 

Thiago Alcantara, James Milner and Jordan Henderson are all over 30, while Naby Keita’s contract will run out in five months’ time.

Yet, although every Reds fan is desperate to see new midfielders arrive at Anfield, Liverpool do not look likely to do anything between now and midnight on Tuesday. 

They have made Jude Bellingham their primary target and will pursue a deal for the Borussia Dortmund man in the summer, when they might also attempt to bring another midfielder or two to the club.

For now though, Liverpool’s business for the winter window is done, which explains why they are only given a 25/1 shot of landing Fernandez.

Newcastle, Arsenal And Manchester City Not In Race

Newcastle have been linked with various midfielders in recent weeks, with Youri Tielemans, Conor Gallagher and Scott McTominay all suggested as potential targets. 

But while the Magpies could try to pull off a deal or two before the deadline, there are no signs they are about to spend over £100m on a player like Fernandez - hence odds of 25/1 with Betfair.

Meanwhile, Arsenal (33/1) appear to be all-in on the aforementioned Moises Caicedo, who would probably cost less than Fernandez - while Manchester City (33/1) are sitting this one out. 

The Argentine will not be playing his football at the Emirates Stadium, St James’ Park or the Etihad Stadium any time soon.
