U.S. Open Cup 2023 Quarterfinals Picks
We’re down to eight in the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, as Cincinnati eyes up a rare cup and Eastern Conference double this year.
There are also still two USL teams trying to upset the odds.
So to help with your soccer betting, we’ve put together our picks for the quarterfinals.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds (+500) at Cincinnati (-210)
First place in the MLS overall standings looks to take one giant step towards a league and cup triumph in 2023.
Cincinnati has been incredible all year and has lost just one game in 19 matches. Not only is it comfortably at the top of the MLS standings right now, it has also defeated New York City and New York Red Bulls on the way to reaching the quarterfinals of the Open Cup.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds has been excellent in its own way this year and is second in the USL Championship Eastern Conference. It also won at New England Revolution in the round of 32 and defeated Columbus Crew at home in the round of 16.
Such a run of form means we cannot rule Pittsburgh out completely, but we think a meeting with MLS’ most in-form side is one step too far for it. The best MLS betting sites agree.
Cincinnati to win 3-0 is +950 with Caesars Sportsbook.
Houston Dynamo (+370) at Chicago Fire (-150)
One of two all-MLS games in the last eight sees Houston Dynamo at Chicago Fire in a tough game to call.
Chicago has not won a game since winning at Austin in the round of 16 and it has also made just two shutouts in the past 10 games since beating Chicago House in the third round of the Open Cup.
Houston has also not won a game away from home in MLS this year and has only a win at Tampa Bay Rowdies in the third round to boast of in this sense. Worse yet, that sole 1-0 win away from home back in April was also just one of the six goals it has scored outside of Houston in 2023.
The Dynamo is one of the worst teams on the road this year and although Chicago is 14th in the Eastern Conference, it has still scored 21 goals and lost two fewer games than Houston.
Chicago to win and both teams to score is +260 with DraftKings Sportsbook.
Inter Miami (+145) at Birmingham Legion (+165)
It's the second game without Phil Neville for Inter Miami with Javier Morales taking charge of the forthcoming games until a new head coach comes in. Morales does, however, have a great chance to rocket Miami right back into the win column in this match.
Neville was fired from his role on Thursday after a loss to New York Red Bulls. Morales' first game was in a loss at home to D.C. United on Sunday. It was also the third loss in a row for Miami, and it now sits with a record of 11 losses in 16 MLS games.
Birmingham Legion beat Charlotte 1-0 in the round of 16 but lost to Detroit City on the weekend, its fourth loss in a row in the USL Championship.
The Legion has also allowed 23 goals in the league this year while losing seven times, and their awful form in the USL Championship right now points us to a win for Miami.
Inter Miami to win 2-1 is +700 with BetMGM Sportsbook.
LA Galaxy (+220) at Real Salt Lake (+100)
The LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake have seen a combined record of 53 goals conceded in 31 MLS games. Worse yet for the Galaxy, they are also the lowest-scoring team in the Western Conference with 13 goals.
It makes this game a tough one to call because we feel it could go either way. At the same time, the terrible defensive records from both teams likely mean goals will come in, just as they did last weekend when these two met in MLS.
There were five goals in that match, with RSL having 20 shots throughout the game. Danny Musovski and Pablo Ruiz scored a goal each that day for Salt Lake, as Gaston Brugman, Memo Rodriguez and Tyler Boyd all bagged a goal for the Galaxy.
It was a game of constant attacks and the same should happen three days after that match. We are, however, picking Salt Lake in this one, as it looks to avenge its loss, and even though Los Angeles won on Sunday, it has still won just three MLS games in 2023 and is in last place in the standings. We're looking to take the Over-Under on number of goals.
Real Salt Lake to win or draw, both teams to score and over 2.5 goals is +196 with FanDuel Sportsbook.
